In Their Own Words

I taught fourth grade in Dayton, Ohio for thirty-four years, and if you want to learn patience with people who aren't listening, that's the training program. Now I live outside Fort Worth near my daughter and I write about what's finally getting done in this country.

For years it felt like nobody in charge even wanted to enforce the laws we already had. You'd watch the news and some town would lose somebody to a person who had no business being here in the first place, and the officials would shrug like weather had done it. Well. The shrugging has stopped, and I intend to write down every single bit of it.

I cover the human side of the enforcement story. The family that finally gets justice. The neighborhood that gets to feel safe again. The ICE agents, and I've met a few fine ones now, doing a job half the country decided to look down on. Dale Rutledge does the numbers and the operations and he does them well, but numbers never made anybody cry in a good way. People do that.

I'm patriotic and I'm not embarrassed about it. I say the pledge. I fly the flag on the porch. If that's corny to somebody, they can read somebody else.
