Let me tell you what came across my kitchen table this week, and I about dropped my coffee cup.
A state representative down in Arkansas named Hallie Shoffner, a Democrat, actually said out loud that farmers would "trade five Americans just for one" illegal immigrant worker. Five of us. For one. She said it in public, on the record, like it was a perfectly reasonable thing to say about her own constituents. You can read the whole thing right here and see for yourself.
Now, folks, I taught fourth grade for 34 years, and I heard a lot of silly things come out of a lot of mouths. But I never heard an adult say, with a straight face, that American workers are worth a fifth of somebody who broke into our country. That takes a special kind of foolishness.
Her constituents are furious, and they ought to be. These are the same folks she's supposed to represent. Farmers, ranch hands, people who get up before the sun and work until their backs ache. And their own representative basically told them, "you're the bargain-bin option." I'd love to see her look a fourth-generation farm family in the eye and explain the math on that one.
What these politicians never seem to understand is this. When you say Americans won't do the work, what you're really saying is you'd rather hire people who can't complain, can't negotiate, and have to take whatever wage gets offered. Call it compassion if you like. It's a rigged game, and American workers are the ones holding the short end of it.
And the timing! We've got ICE out there doing the hard work of getting criminal illegal aliens off our streets, and this is the moment she picks to announce that five Americans equal one illegal immigrant? These fine men and women are putting dangerous people on planes out of this country, and she's out here doing the exchange rate on her own neighbors. Shameful doesn't begin to cover it.
The good news is that people noticed. Regular folks in her district are pushing back hard, and they should. That's how it's supposed to work. You say something this foolish, you answer for it. Nobody gets a pass just because they've got a title after their name.
My daddy used to say you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat the folks who can't do anything for them. I'd add this: you can tell even more about a politician by how she talks about the folks who voted her in.
Anyway, that's my two cents and it's probably worth more than five of hers.
Take care of yourselves out there, and hug your families tight.
TAKE THEM SOUTH
