Folks, pour your coffee and sit down, because this one out of Washington is going to make your blood run cold and then make you plenty mad.
Police arrested a Venezuelan illegal alien near the White House after finding him with a stolen vehicle loaded with firearms, and when officers questioned him, he told them he'd been hearing voices telling him to assassinate President Trump. You can read the full report from the New York Post right here.
Let that stack up in your mind the way it stacked up in mine. A man who had no business being in this country at all. A stolen vehicle. Multiple firearms. And voices in his head telling him to kill the President of the United States. Every single layer of that is a system that failed, and they failed one after another, like dominoes falling in the wrong direction.
Now, some of you are already thinking what I'm thinking: a man who hears voices telling him to hurt people belongs in a facility getting help, and he also never should have been standing on American soil to hear those voices here in the first place. Both things can be true at my kitchen table, and they're true at yours too. But the second problem made the first one our problem, and that's the part that ought to have every politician and every open-borders cheerleader in this country squirming this morning.
I taught fourth grade for 34 years. I had children come through my classroom carrying burdens no eight-year-old should carry, and I learned to spot the difference between a family having a hard time and a situation that put every other child in that room at risk. We used to make those calls. We used to protect the room. Somewhere along the way, the grown-ups in charge of protecting the biggest room in the country decided the rules were optional, and now we've got stolen trucks full of guns parked in sight of the White House.
The Secret Service and the officers involved in this arrest deserve our thanks, full stop. These fine men and women run toward the exact trouble the rest of us pray we never encounter, and this week they may well have stopped something terrible before it started. I don't care what any cable news panel says about them. I know what I see.
And this is the part where I get good and mad. Watch how this story gets covered. Watch how quickly it slides off the front page, if it makes the front page at all. If this had been almost any other kind of suspect, we'd be saturated with coverage for a week. But because the man is an illegal alien and the story embarrasses everybody who spent years telling us the border was secure, it'll get the quiet treatment. I've been watching this dance long enough to know the steps by heart.
Somebody's grandmother in some town right now is going to read about this and think, well, at least they caught him. That's true. They caught him. Thank God they caught him. But catching him was the last line of defense, and the last line of defense shouldn't have to be the only one that works.
So say a prayer for the officers, hug your people tight, and keep your eyes open. That's what I'm doing out here in Texas. Talk soon, folks.
TAKE THEM SOUTH
