Disney finally admitted what everyone with a Fandango app already knew: the Moana live-action remake tanked. The word they went with was "underperformed," which is PR for "we lost a fortune and would rather not discuss the specifics." Now the movie is getting dumped onto Disney+, because nothing says "we believe in this project" like rushing it to streaming before the box office stink clears.

According to IGN, Disney confirmed the streaming release alongside a quiet concession that the theatrical run didn't set the world on fire. The live-action version stumbled into theaters and immediately started losing ground to films that actually wanted to entertain their audience.

Same playbook Disney has been running since they figured out audiences were catching on. Theatrical release goes sideways, the spin machine kicks in, then the streaming dump arrives framed as a "celebration" for the fans. Remember when Disney+ drops felt like an event? Now they feel like a mercy killing. The movie couldn't fill seats, so now it's filler content between scrolling sessions.

The live-action remake machine is one of the most baffling creative decisions in modern entertainment. You take a beloved animated film, drain the visual life out of it by replacing gorgeous animation with uncanny valley CGI, cast people who look nothing like the characters audiences fell in love with, and then act surprised when the box office comes back lower than projected. Disney has run this routine into the ground with Mulan, Little Mermaid, and Snow White too. Your mileage may vary on which one hurt the worst, but the pattern is hard to miss.

Moana was supposed to be different. The safe bet. The brand recognition was enormous. The audience was built in. And Disney still couldn't resist the urge to tamper with it, slap a live-action coat of paint on a story that already worked, and charge people theater prices for a worse-looking version of something they already own.

The fans knew. They always know. The movie limped into theaters and never found its footing, which is what happens when you sell people a lesser copy of something they already have. You can only run that play so many times before the audience stops showing up.

So here we are. Moana live-action lands on Disney+, and the press will call it a "streaming event" while the rest of us call it what it is: a funeral with better marketing. The good news is that the original animated film is still right there on the same service, looking better, sounding better, and not costing anyone a theater ticket. Watch that one instead.
