State Democrats in New York have a new scheme for interfering with federal immigration enforcement. They're asking private parking lot owners to ban ICE from their properties.

Elected officials, sworn to uphold the law, are now lobbying parking lot operators to obstruct federal officers trying to do their jobs. The same people who can't keep their own cities clean want to turn every strip mall and garage into a sanctuary zone.

The push, first reported by Edge Media Network, asks private property owners to deny ICE agents access to their lots. The theory is that if officers can't stage operations from parking areas near courthouses, workplaces, or residential buildings, they'll have a harder time making arrests. Cute theory. In practice, it changes nothing.

ICE agents don't need permission to park on a public street. They don't need a lot owner's blessing to observe a target from a vehicle. If they're conducting surveillance or staging an arrest, they're not going to call ahead and ask whether the local Democratic committee approves. Private property owners can ask someone to leave. That's about the extent of it. If agents have probable cause or are executing a warrant, a parking lot owner's feelings on the matter are irrelevant.

This is the kind of theater New York Democrats specialize in. They already rejected 16,000 ICE detainers on illegal aliens tied to over 52,000 crimes, as we covered earlier this month. Now they want parking lots to be their next line of defense. The scoreboard speaks for itself.

The message to constituents is clear: we're going to protect illegal aliens from federal law enforcement, and we're going to use your local parking lot to do it. If you're a criminal alien in New York, the Democratic Party has your back. If you're a federal agent trying to remove a convicted felon from the country, they'd like you to park somewhere else.

ICE hasn't commented publicly on the effort, and they probably won't. They don't need to. Agents in the New York field office have been operating in hostile territory for years. A few state senators asking parking lot owners to play bouncer isn't going to slow them down.

This does nothing for the people these politicians claim to protect. If ICE wants someone, they'll get them. The arrest just happens on a sidewalk instead of in a parking lot. The net result is the same. The alien gets cuffed, the detainer gets served, and the removal process moves forward. The only difference is the optics, which is all New York Democrats care about anyway.

Twenty-six years in the Border Patrol taught me a lot of things. One of them is that politicians who try to obstruct enforcement always lose in the end. Federal law supersedes a parking lot policy. It supersedes a state senator's press release. And it supersedes whatever performative nonsense gets drummed up in Albany this week.

The count moves on. New York Democrats can write all the letters they want.
